Keywords in "title" tag
This is one of the most important places to have a keyword because what is written inside the "title" tag shows in search results as your page title. The title tag must be short (6 or 7 words at most) and the the keyword must be near the beginning.

Optimizing for synonyms of the target keywords, in addition to the main keywords. This is good for sites in English, for which search engines are smart enough to use synonyms as well, when ranking sites but for many other languages synonyms are not taken into account, when calculating rankings and relevancy.

Using Adwords to your Advantage

So now that you know how Adwords work you can use this to your advantage when building websites. If you build a site about a specific subject you can then use specific keywords to attract adverts. The best way to ascertain which keywords to use are by signing up for an Adwords account you will then have access to Google’s Adwords tools which will show you which keywords are highest paying for a particular subject. In addition it will suggest alternative keywords.

At this point it is probably wise to point out it is against Google’s Terms of Service to specifically create a page just to target Adsense, Obviously if the site has lots of unique content then you are entitles to tweak the keywords to maximize your revenue.

Making Adsense pay

There is very little point adding Adsense to a page with no traffic. It is best to build your site and spend a couple of months driving traffic to the site, once you have a regular amount of people being driven to your site by the search engines then it is time to add Adsense. People unconsciously ignore ads, not because they aren’t interested in the products or services that are being offered, but a natural instinct to focus on the material they’re reading and block out “distractions”. Remember: they’re on the web to look for information. That can be a particular song they want to download, an article on their favorite celebrity, or a chicken recipe they can cook for dinner. They’re concentrating on that issue, and their minds are quickly filtering out whatever seems to intrude on that search. That includes the background noise of the room they happen to be surfing in, and the visual noise on the web page.

Ads are said to be “visual noise”, and ironically, the larger (and more obvious) the ad, the more likely it’ll be ignored. That seems to go against all instincts of advertising—bigger should be better, right? That may work on a highway, when a looming billboard will catch your either whether you plan to look or not, but on the Internet, there are just too many ads. As a gut-reaction, the eye skips over anything that looks like the “traditional” advertising banners, regardless of the text contained in them. Instead of looking like an ad, you are seen as a valid editorial content: as informative, helpful, and credible as the article they happen to be reading.

That’s why your ad background and its border colors should be the same color as the web page on which it’s located. If your website’s white, then your ad assumes that color; if it’s blue, then you know what shade to pick. This isn’t sneaky, it’s reader psychology. Advertisers in magazines have been doing it for years—not copying the color, but the font of the magazine pages. Readers are then more likely to continue reading the ad text rather than skipping it over it because it’s “not part of the page”. By the time they realize that it’s an ad, they’re intrigued by the benefit being offered (and if they aren’t, at least they know about you—much more than what you would have accomplished if the ad had been dismissed). By applying this principle to your Ad Sense, you get better results.

Another trick: use the standard blue color for your links, but make the advertiser’s URL (the domain name below the ad text) in a very unobtrusive color and size. Combine this trick with making the rest of your website content a non-traditional color that is not as noticeable as blue (for example, a dark green), and you have a more subtle way of drawing attention to your Adsense links. Readers will gravitate towards the link, thinking that it is a neutral and objective way of finding more information, and click. And you know what that means for Adsense revenues.

Location, Location, Location

As they say in business, location is the secret to success: be where your market needs you (and in this case, reads you). For example, avoid placing ads on the left or right periphery of the page: people don’t bother looking there, since the webtext flow is from top to bottom. Unless a photo or other graphical element pulls their eyes to the side, there is no reason for them to look beyond those margins. Plus, Internet users are conditioned to look for content in the center— so you also have to be in the center to be deemed “valid content”.

This rule is particularly true for people who have a very specific question or concern and found the page by typing key words into a search engine. They are not interested in anything outside that query. To get their attention, place a large rectangular ad above your content (for example, the top center column) but below the title. Then, choose a message that is related to the key words that were probably used. For example, if it’s a website about “widgets”, and your article is a review on the latest “blue widgets” then Ad Sense on “Find Cheap Widgets Now!” would have a high percentage of clicks.

Why does placing Ad Sense underneath the title work so effectively? Because there is an immediate association with content. Your website title summarizes the topic or concern, the text expounds on it, and your Ad Sense is sandwiched within those two very important elements. You would not get this kind of click through if you placed it above the title, where it’s perceived as literally “outside” the topic and hence, irrelevant or secondary.

Since Google allows you to put three ad blocks, where do you put the other two? At the end of the content, preferably above the Author’s Box. This reaches the educated, and perhaps slightly more cynical reader, who had preferred to read up on the topic and is now ready to make an intelligent, informed decision about what products or services to buy. You can place a third ad block at the side if you have a short article or are concerned about cluttering the site. Otherwise, put it within the content, catching visitors who may be quickly bored with the article and may not reach the end of it, and is willing to “click away” from the site (and hopefully to the advertisers).

If you are anything like me then I’m sure you have been scammed many times online. I see ad after ad on how to easily and quickly make money online. Well I have finally figured it out. If you want to make money online you have to work. If you hear anyone else tell you different, then they are probably setting you up for a scam. I have found adsense to be profitable for me, but it takes some work to make it happen.

One of the best ways to make money online is with adsense in my opinion. Adsense is a program offered by google that pays you to place ads on your website. I would say that in my experience I make an average of 10 cents to 50 cents per click.

Let’s say that you have a website about motorcycles. Let’s also say that the term motorcycles is searched for 10,000 times per month in google. Well if your website gets on the front page of google for this term then you can expect a lot of traffic.

What worked well one day may not work at all when it comes to ranking in the search engines. My best advice to getting your site at the top of the search engines is to provide a well written website with frequently updated content. This is what has worked in the past and will always work in the future. Think about it, when you are searching the internet you are looking for information. It is the job of the search engine to provide you with the information you are searching for.

In the past people have used methods to trick the search engines into ranking their sites well without having to do the work of constantly updating their content. Well these tactics will always come and go, but trust me, there is no substitute to unique, original content. This is where the actual hard work comes in to play. 5 Ways to Monetise your Blog

These days, even with a small site or a new blog, monetisation (monetization for Americans) is a constant consideration. This can be a double edged sword, as getting the right kind of monetisation is key. Fortunately, there are so many options out there you can not only pick and choose, but also test and optimise. If one method of monetisation isn’t working, why not just try another. This is a crucial point to make, just because one site is making lots of money from a program like adsense, doesn’t mean adsense is the best solution for everyone.

For example, this blog makes only a negligible amount of money from adsense, especially considering the decent amount of traffic it receives. Compare this to another blog I run, which gets less traffic, and the click through rates and profits are much higher. This is despite similar ad placements and a smaller audience. Therefore, I’ve recently been investigating other means to monetise (or monetize if you like) this blog, and I was surprised at the wide range of options available.

So below I’ll run through the five most popular methods for monetising websites, along with a brief explanation of the technique and a recommended provider. Please note that some of the links below are affiliate links.

Cost Per Click - This is probably the most common type of advertisement currently on the Internet. Essentially, you display an advert, or a list of links, and you get paid every time someone clicks on them. The most popular provider of this service is Adsense, which is provided by Google. Adsense does put a slight twist on this approach by detecting the type of content on the page and only showing adverts relevant to that content. This should, in theory, should not only increase the number of advertisements people click but also prevent them from being bothered by advertisements they aren’t interested in. Cost Per Action - Cost per action advertisements are similar to the cost per click approach but require the user to do something once they have clicked the link. This is usually buying something, signing up to something or downloading something. While this may sound more difficult to profit from than cost per click (you not only have to get a visitor to click on a link, but also to buy something once they’ve reached the advertising site) the rewards are often much greater. For example, the Amazon Affiliate program offers a percentage of the items sale price if the sold was made through your site. The percentage tends to start at 5% and then go up the more you sell. Essentially, every £100 someone spends after going through your link will net you a minimum of £5, which would take hundreds of cost per click clicks. And just remember how many times you’ve gone to Amazon and ended up spending way more than you intended. There are many companies offering Cost Per Action adverts. Google are pretty new to the market (see link above) whereas Amazon have been going for some time. Amazon can be very successful for some publishers, but you are limited to just the one vendor. Selling Space - Whereas the above approaches require your visitors to do something, this approach guarentees you an income regardless of whether your visitors click the links or buy anything. Quite simply, this approach involves selling some space on your blog that can then be filled with advertisements. Text Link Ads is a great way to turn some of the space on your blog into real money. The great thing about Text Link Ads is that they take up very little space and can be easily integrated into your design. After all, they are just normal links. The way Text Link Ads work is to sell a number of links on your website to advertisers at a set rate. The rate will vary depending on your site and the amount of links you’re trying to sell. Paid for Content - Personally I think paid-for-content is shaky ground. Anything that even hints at a lack of trustworthiness in a blog is dangerous, and I certainly feel as if paid-for-content leaves some questions. I make it clear in the policies of this blog that we do no accept paid for content for that very reason. Essentially, if you sign up for a paid for content service the advertiser will give you a subject, usually a product or service, to write about. When they are happy you have covered the subject appropriately (and met their terms and conditions) you’ll get paid the agreed amount. If you do decide that paid for content is right for you, I have some advice. Disclose everything. Make sure your readers know the content your writing has been paid for and make sure you don’t let the money corrupt your opinions at all. I don’t agree with this approach so I shan’t link to any of the providers, but a google for “pay per post” or “pay per review” should have you covered.

Promote Yourself - While this may only apply to a handfull of bloggers, it shouldn’t be overlooked due to it’s effectiveness. Quite simply, a blog is a very public way to sell yourself or any services you provide. Web developers have been doing this for years, and slowly other people are catching up. If you have a service or product to push, do it through your blog. A word of warning, a good blog can really help sell a product, likewise a bad blog can really hurt a product. If you do intend using your blog for this purpose, keep it professional and ensure only the highest quality content makes it live.

As you can see, the methods of monetising your blog can vary greately. Across the sites I run one makes the most money from adsense, one from Tradedoubler and one from Text Link Ads. You really need to tailor your ads, just like your content, to your audience. I think it’s also important to consider the stage your blog is currently at when looking at monetisation options. If you are just starting out, it’s quite unlikely Text Link Ads will accept you (although there are ways around this, using an affiliate link apparently helps) so AdSense may be your only option. The downside to AdSense is that it treats all sites as equal, so if you have a popular site, you still get paid the same per click as smaller sites (pricing is based on keyword) whereas Text Link Ads will acknowledge more popular sites and reward them with a higher rate. And of course you have to balance the fact that Text Link Ads provides a guaranteed income whereas the CPC and CPA approaches do not.
